The Flower of Amethysts
The Flower of Amethysts is a form of music used for entertainment originally devised by the elf Amena Divedmurders. The rules of the form are applied by composers to produce individual pieces of music which can be performed. Two singers recite any composition of The Lessons of Amethyst while the music is played on a iye. The musical voices bring melody with harmony. The melody has short phrases throughout the form. It is performed without preference for a scale and in free rhythm. Throughout, when possible, composers and performers are to alternate tension and repose.
- Each singer always does the main melody, should perform with feeling, plays rapid runs and modulates frequently.
- The iye always does harmony.
- The Flower of Amethysts has a well-defined multi-passage structure: an introduction and a chorus and a verse all repeated two times.
- The introduction is slow, and it is to be loud. Each of the singers' voices ranges from the middle register to the high register and the iye covers its entire range. Only one pitch is ever played at a time in this passage.
- The chorus slows and broadens, and it is to be moderately loud. Each of the singers' voices ranges from the low register to the middle register and the iye stays in the muddy high register. Only one pitch is ever played at a time in this passage.
- The verse is moderately fast, and it is to fade into silence. Each of the singers' voices covers its entire range and the iye covers its entire range. This passage features only melodic tones and intervals.
