The Festival of Periwinkles
The Festival of Periwinkles is a form of music used during marches and military engagements originally devised by the elf Niri Mirthfulroof. The rules of the form are applied by composers to produce individual pieces of music which can be performed. Three chanters recite nonsensical words and sounds. The entire performance is to be in whispered undertones. The melody has short phrases throughout the form. Only one pitch is ever played at a time. It is performed without preference for a scale and in free rhythm.
- Each chanter always does the main melody.
- The Festival of Periwinkles has a well-defined multi-passage structure: a brief introduction and a lengthy passage and an additional lengthy passage.
- The introduction should be fiery and is moderately fast. Each of the chanters' voices ranges from the middle register to the high register. The passage should be composed and performed using mordents.
- The first simple passage should be broad and is slower than the last passage. Each of the chanters' voices ranges from the low register to the middle register.
- The second simple passage should be graceful and resumes the original tempo. Each of the chanters' voices ranges from the low register to the middle register.
