The Lyric of Song
The Lyric of Song is a form of music used during marches and military engagements originally devised by the elf Coce Umberhides. The rules of the form are applied by composers to produce individual pieces of music which can be performed. The music is played on two nere. The entire performance is fast, and it is to be in whispered undertones. The melody has short phrases throughout the form. Only one pitch is ever played at a time. It is performed without preference for a scale and in free rhythm. Throughout, when possible, composers and performers are to use grace notes.
- Each nere always does the main melody and should perform with a light touch.
- The Lyric of Song has a well-defined multi-passage structure: a brief introduction and one to two passages and another one to two passages possibly all repeated.
- In the introduction, each of the nere ranges from the harsh low register to the vibrating middle register.
- In each of the first simple passages, each of the nere stays in the vibrating middle register.
- In each of the second simple passages, each of the nere covers its entire range from the harsh low register to the crisp high register.
