The Earthen Torches
The Earthen Torches is a devotional form of music directed toward the worship of Deler originally devised by the dwarf Dodok Icyfurnace. The rules of the form are applied by composers to produce individual pieces of music which can be performed. The music is played on one to four otung. The entire performance is to be moderately soft. The melody has short phrases throughout the form. It is performed without preference for a scale and in free rhythm. Throughout, when possible, composers and performers are to use mordents.
- Each otung always does the main melody.
- The Earthen Torches has the following structure: a brief passage and another one to two lengthy passages possibly all repeated.
- The first simple passage should feel calm and is at a walking pace. Each of the otung stays in the piercing low register. Only one pitch is ever played at a time in this passage. The passage should be composed and performed using trills and staccato.
- Each of the second simple passages should be made with a light touch and is moderately paced. Each of the otung covers its entire range from the piercing low register to the ringing high register. This passage typically has some sparse chords.
