The Cyclopean Blossom
The Cyclopean Blossom is a devotional form of music originally devised by the elf Arile Foldpelts. The rules of the form are applied by composers to produce individual pieces of music which can be performed. One to four chanters recite nonsensical words and sounds. The entire performance is to fade into silence. The melody has short phrases throughout the form. Only one pitch is ever played at a time. It is performed using the datome scale and in the etini rhythm. Throughout, when possible, composers and performers are to make trills and alternate tension and repose.
- Each chanter always does the main melody and should be graceful.
- The Cyclopean Blossom has a well-defined multi-passage structure: an introduction, a passage, a bridge-passage and a finale.
- The introduction accelerates as it proceeds. Each of the chanters' voices covers its entire range.
- The simple passage gradually slows as it comes to an end. Each of the chanters' voices ranges from the middle register to the high register.
- The bridge-passage is very fast. Each of the chanters' voices ranges from the middle register to the high register.
- The finale accelerates as it proceeds. Each of the chanters' voices covers its entire range.
- Scales are constructed from twelve notes spaced evenly throughout the octave. The tonic note is fixed only at the time of performance.
- The datome hexatonic scale is thought of as two disjoint chords spanning two perfect fourths. These chords are named adi and thili.
- The adi tetrachord is the 1st, the 2nd, the 3rd and the 6th degrees of the semitone octave scale.
- The thili trichord is the 8th, the 12th and the 13th (completing the octave) degrees of the semitone octave scale.
- The etini rhythm is made from two patterns: the otoga and the cede. The patterns are to be played over the same period of time, concluding together regardless of beat number.
- The otoga rhythm is a single line with three beats. The beats are named dinade (spoken di), cenopu (ce) and ele (el). The beat is stressed as follows:
- | - - x |
- where x is a beat, - is silent and | indicates a bar.
- The cede rhythm is a single line with eight beats divided into four bars in a 2-2-2-2 pattern. The beat is stressed as follows:
- | x - | x - | x - | - x |
- where x is a beat, - is silent and | indicates a bar.
