The Venerable Plays

The Venerable Plays is a form of music used to commemorate important events originally devised by the elf Camela Seavale. The rules of the form are applied by composers to produce individual pieces of music which can be performed. A speaker recites nonsensical words and sounds while the music is played on a feferi, a ethefa and a efiva. The music is melody and rhythm without harmony. The entire performance is fast. The melody has short phrases throughout the form. Chords, seldom-used, are sparse -- intervals and single pitches are favored. It is performed without preference for a scale and in free rhythm. Throughout, when possible, composers and performers are to syncopate.

• The speaker always should be merry.
• The feferi always provides the rhythm and should be energetic. The voice ranges from the strident middle register to the buzzy high register.
• The ethefa always does the main melody and should feel furious. The voice ranges from the strident low register to the watery middle register.
• The efiva always provides the rhythm and should feel furious.
• The Venerable Plays has a simple structure: three to four brief unrelated passages.
• Each of the simple passages is to become louder and louder.
