The Zephyr of Cavorting
The Zephyr of Cavorting is a form of music used during marches and military engagements originating in The Wild Seasons. The form guides musicians during improvised performances. A singer recites any composition of The Plan of Silkiness while the music is played on two ali, two efami and one to two malatha. The musical voices cover melody, harmony and rhythm. The entire performance is slow. The melody has mid-length phrases throughout the form. It is performed in free rhythm. Throughout, when possible, performers are to make trills.
- The singer always should be melancholic. The voice ranges from the low register to the middle register.
- Each ali always does harmony and should perform sweetly.
- Each efami always does the main melody and should be passionate.
- Each malatha always should bring a sense of motion. The voice stays in the buzzy low register.
- The Zephyr of Cavorting has the following structure: an introduction and three lengthy unrelated passages.
- The introduction is voiced by the melody of the singer, the melody of the efami, the harmony of the ali and the rhythm of the malatha. The passage is to be very soft. Chords are packed close together in dense clusters in this passage. The passage is performed using the datome scale.
- Each of the simple passages is voiced by the melody of the efami and the harmony of the ali. Each passage is to be moderately soft. Only one pitch is ever played at a time in this passage. Each passage is performed using the lari scale.
- Scales are constructed from twenty-four notes spaced evenly throughout the octave. The tonic note is fixed only at the time of performance.
- The datome hexatonic scale is thought of as two disjoint chords spanning a tritone and a perfect fourth. These chords are named ifife and fela.
- The ifife tetrachord is the 1st, the 6th, the 12th and the 13th degrees of the quartertone octave scale.
- The fela trichord is the 15th, the 21st and the 25th (completing the octave) degrees of the quartertone octave scale.
- The lari pentatonic scale is thought of as two disjoint chords spanning a tritone and a perfect fourth. These chords are named adi and fela.
- The adi trichord is the 1st, the 10th and the 13th degrees of the quartertone octave scale.
