The Poetic Library
The Poetic Library is a ribald poetic form concerning someone's character originally devised by the goblin Olngo Ravenfiends. The rules of the form are applied by poets to produce individual poems which can be recited. The poem is divided into two tercets and an extremely long series of quintains. Use of consonance and metaphor is characteristic of the form.
- The first part is intended to make an assertion. It has lines with three feet with a syllable weight pattern of long-long (quantitative spondaic trimeter). The rhyme scheme within each stanza is aab.
- The second part is intended to invert the previous assertion. It has lines with five feet with a syllable weight pattern of long-short-long (quantitative cretic pentameter). The rhyme scheme within each stanza is aabcb.
