The Paddle of Clams is a dramatic poetic form intended to teach a moral lesson concerning rivers which grew out of the performances of The Fair Rocks. The rules of the form are applied by poets to produce individual poems which can be recited. The poem is three quintains. Use of epenthesis is characteristic of the form. Each line has thirteen syllables. The fifth line of each quintain reverses the word order of the fourth line.
